Small choices, real roots.

Sustainability isn't my career path — it's a habit. Practical, low-cost environmental choices that fit real college life, from the dorm to the daily commute.

A student's trail guide

Five places to start.

No big lifestyle overhaul required — just better defaults.

Recycling right

Recycling only works when the right things go in the bin.

  • Check what your campus or town accepts — the rules vary by location.
  • Empty and rinse containers; food residue can contaminate a whole bin.
  • Keep plastic bags and film out of curbside bins — return them to store drop-off points.
  • Flatten cardboard boxes, especially during move-in week.

Reducing waste

The greenest item is the one you never have to throw away.

  • Carry a reusable water bottle and coffee cup.
  • Buy used textbooks or rent digital copies.
  • Take notes digitally and print only what you need.
  • Donate or sell furniture and clothes at move-out instead of trashing them.

Saving energy

Small habits in a dorm or apartment add up over a semester.

  • Turn off lights and unplug chargers when you leave the room.
  • Wash clothes in cold water and run full loads.
  • Use LED bulbs in desk and floor lamps.
  • Let your laptop sleep instead of running all night.

Getting around

How you travel is one of the biggest everyday choices.

  • Walk or bike for short trips around campus.
  • Use the campus buses to get between campuses.
  • Take the train or carpool home instead of driving alone.

Everyday consumption

Buying less — and better — is good for the planet and your budget.

  • Buy fewer things, and choose ones that last.
  • Shop secondhand for clothes and furniture.
  • Repair before you replace.
  • Plan meals to cut down on food waste.

Sustainability habits

My angle

Where sustainability meets business.

As a business student, I'm most interested in how sustainable choices can also be smart ones.

Efficiency saves money

Using less energy and fewer materials often lowers operating costs — sustainability and profitability can point the same way.

Real estate

Energy-efficient buildings can cost less to run and appeal to tenants — something I'll look for as a future real estate investor.

Management

The best habits are the easy ones. Good managers design systems where the sustainable choice is the default.
