How to Plan More Sustainable Trips Using Google Maps

By Advay Gahlot · 3 min read

Sustainability is something I care about, and I believe small decisions can make a difference. One of those decisions is how we travel. Whether you're going to college, visiting friends, or heading somewhere new, your transportation choices affect the environment.

For my tutorial, I created a video called "How to Plan More Sustainable Trips Using Google Maps." I wanted to show how you can use a tool you probably already know to make better travel decisions.

What My Video Teaches You

In my video, I show you how to use Google Maps to compare different transportation options. I start by entering a location and destination. Then, I compare driving, walking, biking, and public transportation.

You can see how each option changes your travel time and distance. For example, driving often saves time, but walking and biking produce no direct transportation emissions. Public transportation also gives you another option when you want to reduce your reliance on a car.

I created this tutorial mainly for college students and young adults who want to make more sustainable choices. As a Rutgers student, I understand how often students travel between campuses, classes, and other locations. This video shows you how to plan those trips while considering the environment.

How People Will Find My Video

I expect people to find my video through YouTube searches, Google searches, and my website. Someone searching for "sustainable travel with Google Maps" or "how to compare transportation options" can find information that relates directly to my tutorial.

In her article, Christine T. Wolf (2016) explains that people often search YouTube using simple keywords when they need help completing a task.

Wolf also discusses how YouTube recommends videos based on viewing activity. This means someone watching tutorials about Google Maps or sustainable transportation can discover related content through recommendations. However, these recommendations also influence which information people see.

Why People Will Watch It

I think people will find my video useful because I show the steps instead of just explaining them.

Wolf (2016) found that people value tutorial videos because they can watch someone complete a task and decide whether they can do it themselves. She also explains that viewers judge a video's credibility by looking at the demonstration and deciding whether the process makes sense.

I followed this approach by recording my screen and showing how Google Maps works. You can watch where I click, compare the routes, and follow the same steps yourself.

I also kept the explanation simple because I wanted viewers to understand the process without needing any previous experience.

Final Thoughts

This video connects to the sustainability theme of my website, advaygahlot.com. My goal is to share information that you can apply to your everyday life.

You don't need to completely change your routine to make more sustainable choices. Sometimes, you just need to compare your options before leaving home.

I hope this tutorial helps you think more about your transportation decisions and encourages you to consider alternatives to driving.

If you find the video useful, share it with someone who wants to travel more sustainably.
